Welcome to the LLM Society Blog

The LL.M. Society at the University of Aberdeen has been around for several years. Its main purpose is to bring LL.M. students together to enjoy their time and assist eachothers along their way to success!

We meet frequently and engage in a variety of social activities such as entertaining nights out, challenging sports competitions, and trips around Scotland, as well as educational activities such as guest lectures and the like.

The present blog has been created in the aim of facilitating further communication among us – the LLM Society Members. Please feel free to post your ideas, suggestions and comments.

Islamic finance - Seminar on 18 April

The Aberdeen University LL.M. Society is pleased to invite you to attend the following seminar:

"Islamic finance: A look into the concepts and the industry"

Speaker: Mr. Allen Merhej, Associate with Norton Rose LLP (London, UK)

Seminar Details:

Time: 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Entry fee: £1 (One Pound)

Content of the Seminar:

The seminar will include a general introduction to Islamic finance, its concepts and an overview of the current market practises and the most common Shariah-compliant transactions (working capital/liquidity shortfall financing, projects financing, assets financing, etc).

The seminar will also include a case study on issuing Sukuk Al Ijarah (Islamic bonds based on the lease and lease-back concepts).


Background on the Speaker:

Allen Merhej is a member of Norton Rose’s International Securities Group and the Islamic Finance team. He acquired his experience in Islamic finance in the Middle Eastern markets and advises on Islamic financing structures and Islamic capital markets products.

Allen is a qualified lawyer in Lebanon and has an experience in investment banking, securities, project finance and corporate finance. He has a good knowledge of traditional Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and he is a holder of two post graduate degrees, one in banking and financial markets from Paris I University and one in international business law from Lebanese University. He is also holder of a Masters in Finance degree from ESCP-EAP, France.
