End of the year Party,2008.

The LLMSOCIETY end of the year party,2008 was held at the Tunnels Club in style. The party commenced with an opening speach by the President, followed by the opening of the dance floor by the members of the Executive. Then the dance floor became electrified with Lawyers showcasing their dancing skills.Afterwards,it was time for refreshment and the audience was held to a memorable marshal arts performance by Senseisan Jianliang, from China with everyone asking for more.As if that was not enough, the dance floor was thrown open again, and members swung into action, trying to out-do one another in the latest dance step in town.Meanwhile, some dance-shy members dutifully clung to the Bar trying out some intercontinental blend.
At about 11pm,the nominations for the Mr&Ms LLMSOCIETY contest was received from secret Judges who had been deployed amongst the crowd. The contestants were presented to the audience and were allowed to canvase for votes in 15minutes.At the end of the campaigne time, the entire crowd voted for each contestant as they were called upon to make a short presentation. When the result was announced,Mr.Aibe Dangana emerged the winner of Mr llmsociety while Ms Mayra Juanita Vega became Ms llmsociety. The winners were crowned and presented with a gift. The party ended at about 12pm.
According to most members who attended,it was a lovely party with enough to eat and eventually succeeded in taking their mind away from the pressures of LLM Degree programme.
In that vien they wish that such an electrified gathering can happen regularly.

James Bond Night

Friday 21 November, 2008 was the James Bond Night. The outing started by 8pm with an informal gathering at the famous Union Bar, where members discussed on a wide range of informal issues excluding academics. Ofcourse, it was laced with liquid in glasses(alcoholic and non alcoholic), to get every one in the mood for a James Bond kind of night. At about 11pm, the LLM Society team moved to the Tunnels where the event was held. It was really a James Bond thing as there were casino games, albeit free, for everyone who cared to try. You are asking if i tried? Yes! i did and made some wins, but do not ask me how much i made, because it is part of the James Bond secret. Any way the Bond style was evident in almost everything in the club that night. The music was a blend of James Brown and Tekno style...sure it offered something different from the popular Hip-hop style. In all it was a good night, recourse being had to the heavy snow that beautified the city and confined some of our members to the comfort of their rooms.

The workshop on ‘Interpersonal skills and being assertive

On November the 19th, 2008, LLM Society organised the workshop on ‘Interpersonal skills and being assertive’. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Robin Bowden. He is responsible for the generic skills training for the PhD students at the University of Aberdeen and supports students on issues such as leadership, teamwork, programme and project management, negotiation and communication strategies.
The workshop was designed to give participants an understanding of the relevance and value of interpersonal skills and being assertive. It helped them to develop self-esteem concerning the way they work with colleagues. Apart from that leader of the seminar Mr. Robin Bowden taught us following things:

1. Recognize assertive behaviour and its positive results in the workplace
2. Know where assertiveness is an appropriate response
3. Practice some assertive skills
4. Understand the links between assertiveness, self-esteem and confidence
5. Learn how to work with difficult people and situations

Students really benefited from this workshop and asked to arrange more such useful workshops.

LLM SOCIETY PUB GATHERING

The LLM pub gathering was at its best again uniting old and new members, including past graduates of this prestigeous University. The excitment in the air was so trilling that everyone present wanted to have some more as the DJ filled the room with some special tunes that made us all feel like we just turned 18.It was a beautiful night with a lot to drink and talk about. At least for once people had a break from the tedious academic work that sometimes make us look like 'Metusela'. At the end some of continued our friday groove at some club spots in the city and had a real good time. All i can say to those who mised out is 'sorryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy for being shy to interact', you will surely have another chance to live it up. Hope you will not have plethora of excuses next time.Relax and enjoy the pictures.

LLM SOCIETY SEMINAR HELD ON FRIDAY,14TH NOVEMBER 2008

The LLM Society seminar on 'Contract Negotiations in the oil and gas industry' was successfully held on friday,14th November, 2008 at NK1. It was highly rewarding as the Guest speaker Mr. Bede Nwete took time to shade light on 'chain contract' issues in the industry. True to a core professional, the guest speaker took the participants through some thought-provoking questions that left our mouth agap. We were able to understand some key areas to research on especially for job interviews and some contemporary issues of relevance in the industry.
The seminar was interactive and at the end students were so elated with the LLM Society EXCO for inviting such a sound professional to interact with us. Even when the seminar ended, students were engaged in friendly discussions with our guest speaker untill we walked him to his car.
On the other hand Mr. Nwete has expressed his willingness to honour our future invitations whenever we are ready. Again he promised to make his power point presentation on the subject available to us soon.

Educational Trip to the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse

Our amazing tour started from the Scottish Parliament. At the beginning we had very interesting, interactive and educated guided tour. During our guided tour we had short chat with Ms. Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture. After that we met with Mr. Nigel Don (MSP). He sits on the Justice Committee and is the Parliamentary liaison officer to the Justice Minister. Our meeting with him was indeed useful and remarkable. We understood how the Scottish Parliament works, what MPS do, how are laws made and other interesting matters.

In the afternoon we went to the Palace of HolyRoodhouse. Founded as a monastery in 1128, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh is the Queen's official residence in Scotland. The Situated at the end of the Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyroodhouse is closely associated with Scotland's turbulent past, including Mary, Queen of Scots, who lived here between 1561 and 1567. Successive kings and queens have made the Palace of Holyroodhouse the premier royal residence in Scotland. Today, the Palace is the setting for State ceremonies and official entertaining. We really enjoyed our stay in Edinburgh.
